The #1 thing everyone wants to know about Chow Chows

🤔 Why is their tongue purple?

Chow Chows have extra cells in their tongue called melanocytes — the same cells that give humans freckles and dark skin. But Chow Chows have way more of them than other dogs, and they're packed all through the tongue, gums, lips, and even the roof of their mouth!

These melanocytes pump out a pigment called melanin, which turns their tongue a deep blue-black-purple colour. It's the exact same science behind why some people have darker skin — just cranked up to maximum on a dog's tongue! 🧬

🧪 Science word: The official name is "hyperpigmentation of the oral mucosa." Try saying THAT five times fast!

Newborn Chow Chow puppies have regular pink tongues — just like every other puppy

Dark spots start appearing, like invisible ink slowly revealing itself. The tongue gets blotchy — pink and purple mixed together

Polar bears and Asian black bears have similar dark tongues. Scientists think Chow Chows and bears might share an ancient ancestor from millions of years ago!

💡 Fun fact: Over 30 other dog breeds can have dark spots on their tongues (like Labradors and Golden Retrievers!) — but only Chow Chows and Shar-Peis have the WHOLE tongue coloured. If your dog has a spotted tongue, it might have a tiny bit of Chow Chow in its family tree!

At dog shows, judges actually check the tongue colour! The breed standard says the tongue must be "blue-black — the darker the better." A Chow Chow with pink spots on its tongue as an adult could be disqualified!
